Minoring in Mathematical Sciences

The mathematical and statistical sciences can provide successful students with an added competitive edge, even if they are not math majors. The school offers a minor in mathematical sciences that is designed to help students go beyond the basic math to have a solid understanding of what the numbers might mean to an employer. Job candidates who have received a minor in mathematical sciences can use this as a valuable advantage in a competitive job market. To receive a minor in mathematical sciences, the successful student will complete MATH 2080 and another 12 additional credits in MATH or STAT courses at the 3000 level or higher.

Excluded Courses

Not all 3000- and 4000-level courses can be used towards the minor. Students may count only one of MATH 3650 (Numerical Methods for Engineers) or MATH 4600 (Introduction to Numerical Analysis) toward the minor.

The following courses are excluded and will not count toward the minor:

  • MATH 3080 College Geometry.
  • MATH 3150 Advanced Topics in Mathematics for Elementary Teachers.
  • MATH 3160 Problem Solving for Mathematics Teachers.
  • MATH 3820 Honors Seminar.
  • MATH 3990 Creative Inquiry in Mathematical Sciences.
  • MATH 4080 Exploration and Analysis of Secondary Mathematics.
  • MATH 4300 Actuarial Science Seminar I.
  • MATH 4320 Actuarial Science Seminar II.
  • MATH 4810 Seminar in Mathematics.
  • MATH 4820 Undergraduate Research.
  • MATH 4910 Independent Study.
  • MATH 4920 Professional Development.
  • MATH 4990 Creative Inquiry in Mathematical Sciences.
  • STAT 3090 Introductory Business Statistics.

Adding a Minor

To add a minor in mathematical sciences to your degree program, consult your academic adviser in your primary major to complete a Change of Academic Program Form. Students are not required to see an adviser in mathematical sciences in order to enroll in the minor, but students are welcome to stop by the office of the coordinator of undergraduate studies in Martin O-102 for advice on specific course selection.

Questions about undergraduate classes or degree programs in mathematical sciences should be emailed to the undergraduate coordinator.
