About the Department
The overarching goal of the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences is to pursue excellence in discovery, engagement and learning, while also cultivating academic excellence, collaboration, diversity, inclusion and innovation.
The SMSS boasts a first-rate research faculty with publications regularly appearing in a wide range of leading professional and scholarly journals. The school’s recent formation marks Clemson’s transition to a Carnegie R1 university, a well-earned recognition of the school’s organization, as well as the prestigious research activities undertaken by the SMSS faculty. Students in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences are part of an inclusive and supportive working and learning environment in which faculty, staff, students, researchers and visitors are encouraged to engage and contribute to the collective understanding of the mathematical and statistical sciences.

Mission and Vision
The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences is dedicated to Clemson’s overall mission of discovery, learning and engagement.
Letter from the Director
It is an exciting time to be at Clemson, especially in the newly formed School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences. Clemson transitioned to a Carnegie R1 University as the Department of Mathematical Sciences transitioned to the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to lead the new school and to help set the direction and vision for these first few formative years.
Our faculty is first-rate, and we continue to recruit top talent. Their publications appear in the top professional journals and many of our faculty receive regular support for their research through the Department of Defense, the National Institutes for Health, the National Science Foundation, the Simons Foundation and others. We aspire to be recognized nationally and internationally as a hub of research activity in the mathematical and statistical sciences which excels in instruction and mentoring.
In addition to our focus on research and discovery, we are also preparing the next generation with the analytical tools and deep understanding required to face the present and future challenges of our state and nation while preparing Clemson graduate and undergraduate students from a wide variety of disciplines with the mathematical and statistical tools to effectively navigate the rigors of their chosen fields of study and future careers. The future careers of Clemson students are more data intensive than ever and require state of the art tools and understanding of data science. It is imperative that as we develop as a leader in research that the school continues to seek to engage students innovatively at all levels in learning while also involving them in discovery in the mathematical and statistical sciences.
While advancing in research — and in learning and engagement — it is also important that we develop and maintain an environment and culture in which everyone can thrive. We will maintain an inclusive and supportive working and learning environment in which faculty, staff, students, researchers and visitors are encouraged to engage and contribute to the collective understanding of the sathematical and statistical sciences. We will seek and celebrate diversity among our student and faculty population by utilizing programs such as our new collaborative degree program with SC State University.
