Getting Started with ChatGPT Edu at Clemson

Clemson University students, faculty, staff and affiliates have access to ChatGPT Edu, a version of the generative AI system that allows the Clemson community to explore practical uses of AI in education, research, and day-to-day work within a secure, institutionally managed environment.

What is ChatGPT Edu?

ChatGPT Edu is a version of ChatGPT designed for higher education. The generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool includes features and service protections intended for University use. The online tool can help users generate and refine written content, summarize information, support studying and problem-solving, and assist with a variety of productivity tasks.

Information entered in Clemson’s ChatGPT Edu environment is protected and not used to train AI systems outside the University environment. Clemson has developed “quick guides” for students, faculty and staff with specific directions and considerations for using ChatGPT Edu in different contexts.

Who can use ChatGPT Edu?

ChatGPT Edu is available to all active students, faculty, staff and affiliates.

How to Access ChatGPT Edu

All students, faculty, staff and affiliates must request a Clemson University ChatGPT Edu account using the Account Request Form. The automated process will create the user's ChatGPT Edu account within an hour. Once the account has been created, users will receive a welcome email from OpenAI. After receiving that welcome email, follow these steps to log in to the University environment.

  1. Go to ChatGPT.
  2. Select “Log in” and enter your @clemson.edu email address. Do not use your @g.clemson.edu email address.
  3. Enter your Clemson username and password on the University single sign-on page.
  4. To confirm you are in the secure Clemson University environment, look for your name, “clemson-chatgptedu” and the orange Tiger Paw in the bottom left corner of the screen.

If you previously created an account using your Clemson email address

Some users may have previously created a standard ChatGPT account using their Clemson email address. These users must still request a Clemson Chat GPT Edu account using the process detailed above. Upon logging in for the first time, existing users will be given two options:

  • Transfer chat history and merge the existing account to the Clemson ChatGPT Edu environment.
  • Download a copy of the chat history from the existing account, erase the previous data from ChatGPT, and start a new ChatGPT Edu account using your Clemson email.

Chat history and GPTs may take some time to appear after account conversion. If you would like to transfer your chat history to a new personal account, review OpenAI's article on transferring your conversations.

Research and advanced tools

ChatGPT Edu also allows expanded access to advanced tools.

Codex

OpenAI’s advanced AI coding agent is available to all Clemson ChatGPT Edu users.

Deep Research, Image Generation and ChatGPT Pro

Increased credits for deep research and image generation, and the ChatGPT Pro model are available to faculty and staff by completing the High-Tier ChatGPT Edu Service request form.

Additional Apps and Integrations

The ability to share custom GPTs, and requests for ChatGPT apps, plug-ins or other integrations, must be submitted for evaluation through the appropriate request form before use.

Guidance and Policies

The use of ChatGPT Edu must be conducted in accordance with Clemson University policies and with regard to personal accountability. While AI can help with tasks like brainstorming, drafting, editing, summarizing and studying, ChatGPT Edu may produce incomplete or incorrect outputs. Users remain responsible for accuracy and appropriate use. For details on responsible, ethical and safe use, review Clemson’s published policies and guidance.
