A South Carolina native, Sam is a former principal and founding partner of Stubbs Muldrow Herin architects, and now serves as a mentor to the second generation firm known as SMHa. Since graduating from Clemson University with his Master of Architecture degree, Sam has served on various architecture related boards and committees including the Clemson Architectural Foundation (President 2024-25). AIA South Carolina (Past President) and the Mount Pleasant Design Review Board. In founding the firm in 1990, Sam and his partners (Sidney Stubbs, Jr. FAIA, Charles Muldrow, AIA, and Steve Graudin, AIA) remained steadfast to keeping the firm small to mid-size, with a principal lead team involved from design through construction. His practice included a diverse range of project types with designs responding to the community, the local architectural vernacular, and coastal conditions unique to South Carolina. Projects include the meticulous renovations to the historic St. John’s Lutheran Church post Hurricane Hugo; knitting together new and historic architecture for learning at Buist Academy and Ashley Hall Schools in downtown Charleston; and responding to patient-centered care at MUSC Health’s East Cooper Clinic and the Hospice House of Charleston. While a recipient of numerous honors and design awards, the most meaningful may be his firm’s AIASC Firm Award for design quality, client service, and community responsibility in 2004.
