Message from the Executive Director
Clemson University’s Office of Emergency Management exists to help build and sustain a safe, resilient, and prepared Clemson community. Our work extends beyond emergency response and proactive planning; it is rooted in meaningful partnerships, continuous improvement, and a shared commitment to supporting the University’s teaching, research, athletic, service, and student experience missions in an increasingly complex environment. We are focused on strengthening the systems, relationships, and culture that allow the University to adapt, operate, and thrive through change and disruption while advancing institutional resilience and preparedness.
Our team’s approach to Emergency Management emphasizes coordination, innovation, and continuous learning. We strive to help create the conditions for effective and informed decision-making before pressure and uncertainty arise, strengthening Clemson’s ability to sustain its core missions during times of uncertainty and change. Through planning, training, exercises, and collaboration, we enhance preparedness, coordination, and situational awareness across Clemson’s campuses, research and education centers, global programs, and the many locations where Clemson’s work takes place.
The strength of Emergency Management begins with the dedicated professionals who bring their expertise, dedication, and commitment to serving the Clemson community every day. Their work helps lay the foundation for effective coordination between the many individuals and organizations we collaborate with before, during, and after emergencies, from dispatchers connecting those in need with help, to first responders operating on scene, to the Emergency Operations Center, the Executive Leadership Team, and the Board of Trustees, each playing an important role in guiding the University through times of disruption. I’m proud to be a part of this team and grateful for the strong partnerships, trust, and shared purpose we share with students, faculty, staff, public safety teammates, healthcare providers, and our local, regional, state, and federal partners. Together, these relationships enhance our ability to serve our communities in both everyday operations and times of crisis.
As risks and challenges evolve, we remain focused on enhancing capabilities and helping the University navigate uncertainty with confidence. Our office will pursue innovative solutions and build capacity that support a resilient and adaptable future for Clemson University. We are honored to work alongside our campus and community partners in service to the people, experiences, and missions that make Clemson special.
With appreciation,
Sarah Custer
Executive Director of Emergency Management
