Emergency Notifications
Emergency Notifications are sent via several methods to warn the University community of imminent threats or disruptions to campus services, such as class cancellations. Alerts are only sent when there is a potential threat to safety or a major disruption to campus services, and for monthly tests.
Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to register their mobile phone number to receive texts. Additional email addresses and phone numbers can be added following the instructions in the Account Management section.
Emergency Notifications are now CU Alerts
Formerly known as CU Safe Alerts, Clemson’s emergency notifications are now called CU Alerts. The name change allows more efficient use of space within the 160-character limit text messages and allows recipients to see more of the emergency information in the preview window.
Alerting Methods
All @clemson.edu email addresses automatically receive CU Alerts. You can easily add additional or family members’ email addresses through your account by following the instructions in the Account Management section.
Text Messages
Clemson University students and employees receive reminders to validate their primary cell phone number to receive CU Alerts on my.Clemson.

Desktop Alerts
Clemson University students are encouraged to download Alertus Desktop on their Mac or Windows computer to receive desktop pop-ups for emergency alerts.
Social Media
Members of the community can view many CU Alerts on Clemson Safety sites. Follow us @ClemsonSafety on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) to receive alerts and regular safety tips and information.
Website
Members of the community can view CU Alerts on the Alerts.clemson.edu page with the most recent messages at the top of the page.
Warning sirens
Clemson’s Main Campus has sirens to warn individuals who are outside of certain imminent threats to the University community. When the sirens sound, you should:
- Follow the announced instructions.
- If the audible announcement cannot be understood, check your cell phone and/or email for a CU Alert and follow the instructions.

- Clemson University employees and students receive periodic reminders to update their cell phone number on my.Clemson.
- To check your primary number at any time, visit my.Clemson, got to My Profile, click on Phone Numbers, and view and/or update the Cell Phone number listed.

Why should I add my cell phone number to receive alerts?
Emergencies can occur with little to no warning. When seconds matter, receiving CU Alerts via text messaging is often the fastest way to receive potentially life-saving notifications.
Alerts are only sent when there is a potential threat to safety or a major disruption to campus services and for monthly tests.

Will my cell phone number be kept confidential?
Yes. Numbers entered into CU Alerts are only used for emergencies and tests, they are never shared or sold.

Can I opt-out of receiving alerts via my @clemson.edu email?
You can opt-in or out of receiving alerts via text message, but cannot opt-out of official emails. This is the University’s way to ensure that all members of our community can receive timely warnings in emergencies.

How often are CU Alerts and the warning sirens tested?
CU Alerts via email, text messages, desktop alerts, social media and the website are tested monthly.
Clemson University and Duke Energy warning sirens are tested during the first month of each calendar quarter (January, April, July and October).

How do I learn about safety situations that may affect me at locations other than main campus?
Receiving emergency alerts for where you live, work and visit is important to protecting your safety.
Visit your county’s Emergency Management website for information on how to sign up for local Emergency Alert Systems.
Consider purchasing NOAA Weather Radios for your home and work. These radios broadcast official weather warnings, watches, and forecasts, along with certain non-weather emergencies.
