Research & International Visitors

Introduction

People at the Languages and International Business Conference at CU

Welcome

Clemson University welcomes international visitors and supports opportunities for international research and academic collaboration. When a visit involves research facilities, laboratories, technical discussions, equipment, data or other research activities, additional review may be necessary to protect Clemson research and meet federal research security and export control requirements.

Contact & Registration

Before Hosting an International Visitor

Clemson employees hosting an international visitor or delegation must complete the University's International Visitor Registration process at least 30 days before the planned visit. The Office of Research Security (ORS) may request additional information when a visit involves research activities, laboratories, technical discussions or demonstrations, government representatives, regulated research, or other potential research security or export control concerns.

More Information

What ORS May Need From the Host

Be prepared to provide information about:

  • Visit and Clemson hosts — Visit dates, faculty host, participating PIs and the person coordinating the visit.
  • Visitors and affiliations — Names, titles, institutional or organizational affiliations, and available organizational websites or biographies for delegation members, including accompanying staff and interpreters. Include other organizations represented and citizenship, if known.
  • Government representation — Whether any visitor represents a foreign government, government agency, military, diplomatic or consular office, or government-sponsored delegation, and in what capacity.
  • Purpose and agenda — Topics to be discussed, Clemson personnel involved, and planned presentations, demonstrations, tours or hands-on activities.
  • Locations and access — Buildings, laboratories and rooms to be visited; escort arrangements; and anticipated access to equipment, research materials, data, software, systems or shared laboratory spaces. Identify any planned photography or recording.
  • Research that could be exposed — Research conducted by participating PIs or within areas the visitors will access that involves Technology Control Plans, controlled information, regulated research, export-controlled technology, or sponsor-imposed access restrictions. ORS may request project, sponsor or award information as needed.
  • Funding and proposed commitments — Who is organizing and funding the visit, existing Clemson relationships, and any proposed agreements, support letters, gifts, funding or future collaborations.

Why ORS Reviews Research-Related Visits

ORS review helps identify and manage restricted-party, export-control, regulated-research and research-security concerns before visitors arrive.

Depending on the circumstances, ORS may recommend:

  • Escort or access requirements
  • Limits on laboratory or facility access
  • Protection of research data or technical information
  • Restrictions on photography or recording
  • Removal or protection of controlled equipment, information or materials
  • Other safeguards appropriate to the visit

Visitors should not be given access to controlled information, regulated research, restricted laboratories or controlled technology unless required reviews and authorizations have been completed.
