Clemson Global Travel Registration
Student Guidelines for University-Related International Travel
Students traveling outside of the U.S. for a university-related purpose, such as conducting research or attending a conference, need to register their travel in the Clemson Global Travel Registration Portal. This applies to graduate and undergraduate students as well as creative inquiry, student organizations and other similar groups. If your international travel is credit-bearing, please contact abroad@clemson.edu for the proper procedure.
The Global Travel Registration process assists students in thinking through their preparation for travel and the ability to assess risk at their destination. Higher-risk destinations or engagement activities will undergo further review by Clemson’s High-Risk Travel Advisory Group (HRTAG).
For students considering organized study abroad programs, please refer to the list of approved programs.
Procedure
- Complete the Clemson Global Travel Registration.
- In preparation to submit the registration request, read the U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory for the destination(s), and have available details of local accommodation and transportation, proposed travel plans, local contacts, etc.
- If the destination is a U.S. Department of State (DOS) Travel Advisory Level 3 or 4, or the proposed activity presents elevated risk—including but not limited to remote field studies, handling wild animals, scuba diving, construction, or other higher risk activities—additional documentation and review may be required by the University’s High Risk Travel Advisory Group.
- Student will be notified of the travel request review outcome.
- If the travel request is processed, the student will be required to purchase international health insurance, register in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), and download and activate the AlertTraveler phone app.
- Students traveling as part of their assistantship or university employment should also complete the following. We advise working on this concurrently while waiting for travel request review outcome.
- Submit a university travel authorization request.
- This request will be routed for appropriate approvals prior to receiving clearance to work from abroad
