Mr. Tim Hurlburt is the Associate Director of Bands at Clemson University where he is the director of the Jazz Ensemble, conductor of the Concert Band, director of the Basketball Pep Band and assistant director of Tiger Band. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from Michigan State University in 1998 and a Master of Music degree in Conducting from Texas State University in 2003. Before arriving in Clemson in 2008, Mr. Hurlburt taught band in the public schools of Port Huron, Michigan where his efforts saw a sharp increase in the number of students participating in music. As a graduate assistant at Texas State University, Tim served as a teaching assistant for 3 music education classes, directed the basketball band, assisted with the Bobcat Marching Band, co-conducted the Symphonic Band, was principal conductor of the Concert Band, and was principal trumpet for the Wind Ensemble which performed at the Texas Music Educators Conference and at the regional College Band Director's National Association conference in Kansas City, Missouri. He has also played principal trumpet in the Michigan State University Symphony Band, Spartan Marching Band, Spartan Brass, and was a member of the Michigan State University Wind Symphony. Passionate about new wind music, Mr. Hurlburt is an active member of College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) and participates regularly in clinics and workshops. He gave a presentation about new works for wind ensemble at the ACC Band Director's Conference in 2009 and works hard to stay connected with current composers and their works. Tim writes drill and arrangements for athletic bands in Michigan, Texas, and South Carolina and is the drill writer for Clemson University Tiger Band. Because of his continued interest in public school music education, Mr. Hurlburt is often seen in high school band rooms across the upstate of South Carolina. He is an active clinician for both marching and concert ensembles and has begun some community outreach programs such as "Friday Night Lights" (which allows Tiger Band students to perform with high school bands during their football games) to make Tiger Band more visible beyond the campus border and to support local music programs.
