All CAFLS and PSA employees are eligible to be nominated for the awards listed below.

Award Descriptions

  • Staff Awards

    These awards recognize staff members who demonstrate outstanding dedication and commitment to the College or PSA and their work unit. All award winners will receive a plaque and honorarium for $500.

    A single award will be given in each of the following staff categories:

    Number of Awards

    Administrative (clerical) – employees who support one or more of the mission areas within CAFLS and PSA (teaching, research, Extension, and public service) by performing a variety of administrative and clerical duties. Examples of employee job titles in this category include but are not limited to: Accounting/Fiscal Analyst I, Admin Specialist, Administrative Assistant, and Administrative Coordinator.

    Technical (field) – employees who support one or more of the mission areas within CAFLS and PSA (teaching, research, Extension, and public service) by performing a variety of field-based technical duties. Examples of employee job titles in this category include but are not limited to: Agriculture/Animal Associate, Agricultural Aide, Building/Ground Specialist, Natural Resources Technician, Program Assistant, and Wildlife Biologist.

    Technical (laboratory/office) – employees who support one or more of the mission areas within CAFLS and PSA (teaching, research, Extension, and public service) by performing a variety of laboratory- or office-based technical duties. Examples of employee job titles in this category include but are not limited to: GIS Manager, Lab Assistant, Lab Specialist, and Research Specialist.

    Professional – employees who support one or more of the mission areas within CAFLS and PSA (teaching, research, Extension, and public service) by performing a variety of duties. The employee applies his or her specialized knowledge to individual situations that are primarily intellectual, managerial or creative, and that require the exercise of discretion and judgment. Examples of employee job titles in this category include but are not limited to: Accounting/Fiscal Analyst (II, and III), Accounting/Fiscal Manager, Director, Extension Associate, Program Coordinator, Scientist, and Student Services Manager.

    Extension Agent (junior) – employees with the job title of Assistant or Associate Extension Agent who support the Extension mission at the county, area, or state level.

    Extension Agent (senior) – employees with the job title of Senior, Senior Associate or Distinguished Extension Agent who support the Extension mission at the county, area, or state level.

    Eligibility

    All full-time staff (FTE and TLP) employees with a minimum of one year of CAFLS or PSA service at the time of nomination are eligible.

    Nomination/Selection Procedure

    Staff may be nominated by their supervisor, other staff, faculty, or students by completing an award cover sheet and submitting the materials specified on the sheet.

    A review committee consisting of one staff member from each category above will screen nominees and make recommendations to the CAFLS Dean and VP of PSA.

  • Faculty Awards

    These awards recognize outstanding contributions of faculty to teaching, research, and Extension, as well as advising and mentoring at Clemson University. All award winners will receive a plaque and honorarium for $500.

    Research – the award honors two faculty members (one junior, and one senior) with high merit of scholarship and exemplary research performance. This award is intended to recognize recent (i.e., last five years) research productivity and achievements – not a lifetime achievement recognition.

    Teaching – the award honors two faculty members (one junior, and one senior) who demonstrate a commitment to quality instruction, show evidence of a creative combination of teaching strategies, and generate enthusiasm in students.

    Extension – the award honors two faculty members (one junior, and one senior) who have demonstrated commitment to excellence in extension/outreach programs and who have made significant contributions to the spirit of engagement found in our land grant mission.

    Advising/mentoring – the award honors one faculty or staff member who has served undergraduate advisees in exemplary ways, or demonstrated excellence in graduate student mentoring.

    Number of Awards

    One faculty or staff member will be honored for their advising or mentoring contributions. Two awards, one for junior faculty and one for senior faculty, will be given in each of the other categories.

    Eligibility

    All regular and special faculty with a minimum of one year of CAFLS service at the time of nomination are eligible. Junior and senior faculty are defined as:

    Teaching

    • Junior - 6 years of experience or less
    • Senior - more than 6 years of experience

    Research

    • Junior - within 10 years of completion of their terminal degree
    • Senior - more than 10 years since completion of their terminal degree

    Extension

    • Junior - Assistant Professor or Post-doctoral Fellow
    • Senior - Associate Professor or Professor

    The advising/mentoring award is open to both faculty and staff (professional) employed by CAFLS.

    Nomination/Selection Procedure

    A review committee consisting of a faculty representative from each academic department will screen nominees and make recommendations to the CAFLS Dean.

  • Graduate Student

    These awards recognize outstanding contributions of graduate students to teaching or research at Clemson University.

    Number of Awards

    Up to two teaching and two research awards will be given.

    Eligibility

    The awards are limited to currently enrolled graduate students who have been employed by Clemson as a paid teaching or research assistant during at least one semester in the last academic year.

    Nomination/Selection Procedure

    Students may be nominated by faculty, staff or other students by completing an award cover sheet and submitting the materials specified on the sheet.

    A review committee consisting of the CAFLS Graduate Program Coordinators from each academic department will screen nominees and make recommendations to the CAFLS Dean.

Nomination Instructions

All Award Nomination Forms Must Include:

  • Nominees: First & Last Name, Work Address, Email, Position Title, Department/Unit
  • Supervisor of Nominee: First & Last Name, Email
  • 250 words or Less describing the highlights, achievements, and accomplishments to be used at the awards ceremony, website, etc.

Supplemental Information by Award Type:

 

  • Staff Awards (Advising/Mentoring, Administrative, Extension Agent, Professional, Technical Field/Lab-Office)

    Required:

    • Written justification in support of nomination (2-page limit)

    Optional:

    • Additional Support Letters (1-page limit each)
  • Faculty Awards (Teaching, Extension, Advising/Mentoring)

    Required:

    • Written justification in support of nomination (2-page limit)

    Optional:

    • Additional Support Letters (1-page limit each)

     

  • Faculty Awards (Research) 
    Required:
    • Primary Area: In 200 words or less, describe your primary and secondary (if applicable) areas of research or creative activity.
    • Achievements: In 500 words or less, describe major research or creative achievements, including any new discoveries/breakthroughs, major contributions to the field, external funding, creativity, originality, editorships, and impact of work (e.g., for articles, use impact factor of journals, citations…)
    • Research and Creative Activity Recognition: List major awards (with an emphasis on national/international recognition) related to research and creative works.
    • CV: 10 pages maximum with an emphasis on scholarly related activity, grants, patents, creative works for the last 5 years)

    Optional:

    • Examples of Work (3 maximum, examples should be from the last 5 years and selected to provide evidence of quality rather than quantity)
  • Graduate Student Award: Teaching
    Required:
    • Written justification in support of nomination (2-page limit)
    • Two additional supporting letters from students; at least one student letter of reference must be from a student directly served by the nominee (e.g., class, lab, etc.)
    • Teaching philosophy statement from nominee.
    • Statement of improvement/deficiencies that the nominee has realized through teaching.

    Optional:
    • Additional support letter (1-page limit)
  • Graduate Student Award: Research

    Required

    • Written justification in support of nomination (2-page limit)
    • Current CV for the nominee

    Optional

    • Additional support letter(s), no more than two (1-page limit each)
