About

Welcome Letter

Welcome to the Department of Food, Nutrition, and Packaging Sciences. If you are a current or prospective undergraduate student who is exploring your career possibilities, I encourage you to look at our degree offerings all of which provide our graduates with many career options.

Our Packaging Science major is one of the top programs in the country. As a packaging science major, you’ll learn all about the design, engineering, science, innovation, research, and business practices that make up this diverse industry. Students in the major complete a 6-month Co-Op experience at a company and, upon graduation, are quickly hired into well-paying positions. Employers tell us that our graduates are well-prepared and ready to contribute on their first day of work.

Many of our Nutrition students become registered dietitians (through a nationally accredited program) and work in clinical settings, community health facilities, or food service establishments. We have a 100% placement rate for students applying to dietetic internships. These internships are required before graduates can sit for the national dietetic exam.

Thinking about Pre-Med or another professional degree? About half of our nutrition students that apply to medical schools (49% acceptance rate which is higher than the national average) are accepted. Our students have an even higher rate of acceptance to other professional schools: osteopathic medicine (68% acceptance rate); physical therapy (79%); dentistry (73%); physician assistant (59%); and optometry (100%). Nutrition is the perfect choice if you are passionate about improving the healthfulness of our youth, adults, and seniors. Many of our nutrition graduates continue their studies and pursue a graduate degree at Clemson or another leading Carnegie R1 institution.

Our Food Science major will challenge you to become proficient in food microbiology, food chemistry, and food processing through an Institute of Food Technologist’s approved curriculum. Like our other majors, students studying in this discipline develop a strong understanding of science but also learn how to apply this information to real world situations. Students can choose to work for a food manufacturer or to continue their studies and obtain a graduate degree. Our Culinology emphasis area will teach you how food preparation will affect the aroma, flavor, and appearance of those delicacies you craft for the table. We go above and beyond the culinary schools to teach you both the art and the science behind taste.

As you can see from these many offerings, our programs take you from the farm-gate to the final packaged product (our packaging science program also looks at the packaging of all consumer products in addition to food) and even to the dining room table. We also help you to understand how delicious and healthful choices affect your well-being.

If you want to further your academic studies, we offer a Master of Science (M.S.) in Food, Nutrition and Culinary Sciences; an M.S. in Packaging Science; and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Food, Nutrition, and Packaging Sciences. Our outstanding faculty represent some of the best and brightest in their fields and many have distinguished international reputations. As a graduate student in our programs, you will apply the scientific method every day as you explore the amazing universe around us.

In all our undergraduate and graduate programs, we focus on the total student experience. You can develop leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills by participating in one of our many student clubs. You can gain real-world experience through co-ops and internships. You can explore the natural world by working with graduate students and world-class faculty through a research or Creative Inquiry project. In our department, you can enhance your college experience through study abroad, honors, and volunteering. On day one when you arrive at Clemson, we encourage you to start planning for your postgraduate career. We are dedicated to helping you achieve your goals through hard work, passion, and professional growth.

As you decide on your path forward please note that U.S. News and World Report (2022) ranked Clemson University as a top 30 public institution for the 16th consecutive year. We are proud of our university and the students, faculty, and staff that work every day to make this world a better place.
