MENG IE FAQ

Our Masters of Engineering in Industrial Engineering program is one of a kind, with no other U.S. research university offering a MENG IE degree with a technical emphasis on supply chain analytics and decision modeling. Clemson University offers several graduate degrees for STEM professionals, but none feature our unique curriculum and cohort model. With a MENG IE degree, students have a professional edge by gaining technical expertise and experience, enabling them to complete tasks more effectively and contribute in new ways to their company. Many of our graduates have used their degrees to advance internally within their organizations.

Our goal for the MENG program is to provide value to our students from the very first class. Our courses are designed to equip students with immediately applicable skills to enhance their workplace productivity - before the class is even finished. The MENG IE is a terminal professional degree program that emphasizes application rather than theory. The curriculum culminates with a required final large-scale, semester-long project demonstrating the mastery and use of the topics taught in the program.

The MENG IE has no U.S. residency requirements. Our program is 100% online, so while students located near Clemson, SC, may elect to visit campus or attend graduation - it is never required. Domestic and international students also pay the same tuition rates - ensuring great value for all students.

  • What is the cost and can I use employee tuition assistance?

For current tuition, please visit the tuition calculator. Textbooks are an additional cost, but faculty have created a reference library of books used in multiple courses.

If your employer provides partial or full tuition assistance, you can use it to pursue your MENG IE degree. MENG IE students receive a bill each semester that can be paid in person with a check or online with a credit or debit card. You may be able to pay with a corporate card or account - or get reimbursed depending on your company's policies. If your employer requires documentation or transcripts to comply with tuition assistance programs, we can help.

  • What is the time commitment?

The program requires a total of 40 months to complete, with students taking three classes during a calendar year (one at a time). For every 3-credit hour course, we recommend students plan to spend 10-12 hours a week (60-90 minutes a day) on course-related activities. Because our program is 100% online and asynchronous, you can plan your course studies around your work schedule. Complete a few hours of coursework a day, or dedicate your weekends to course activities. Our program is designed with flexibility in mind. This balanced approach results in an enjoyable learning experience, better retention, and a positive impact on your current job.

  • Can I take a semester off or double up?

Our curriculum model is based on a sequential 10-course sequence. If students decide to take a semester off for a life or career event, they drop back a cohort and continue forward. This cohort model ensures that our MENG IE students build relationships with peers over the course of their studies. Students are not allowed to take more than one course a semester. The program is designed for working professionals, adding 20+ hours of coursework onto a 40+ hour work week is not sustainable or conducive to meaningful learning.

  • How much math and do I need an engineering degree?

We have a minimum mathematics requirement of either passing college-level Calc 1 or both Business Calc & Statistics; no GRE is required for entry to the program. While courses draw on mathematically driven tools, lectures and assignments focus on applying math and statistics to solve real-world problems. Software is often utilized alongside traditional mathematics to increase the applicability and accessibility of the material.

Our MENG IE program accepts students from a variety of academic backgrounds. If you do not have a B.S. in an engineering or STEM discipline, we will review your undergraduate academic transcripts to ensure you have foundational mathematical skills. We require a minimum of 6 credit hours of undergraduate-level calculus or statistics.
