B-1/B-2 Visas

The B-1 visa is for short-term business visits, such as attending conferences, seminars, or professional events. The B-2 visa is for tourism or medical visits. These visas are not appropriate for students or long-term academic appointments at Clemson University, nor for scholars collaborating with Clemson faculty.

Visa Waiver Program (VWP)

Citizens of select countries may visit the U.S. for up to 90 days without a visa under the VWP. Business travelers enter in WB status, and tourists enter in WT status. VWP travelers cannot extend their stay or change immigration status once in the U.S.

To enter under the VWP, travelers must:

  • Have a valid passport.
  • Obtain ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) approval before traveling.
  • Carry a printed copy of their ESTA approval.

Note: Travelers recently denied a U.S. visa, or with certain travel histories (e.g., to Cuba, Iran, North Korea), may no longer be eligible for the VWP. For full eligibility details, visit the U.S. CBP website.

Employment on a B Visa

Employment is not permitted. However, B-1 visitors may receive travel reimbursements or honoraria for academic activities (under 9 days per institution, and no more than 5 institutions in 6 months). All activities must be discussed with Immigration Services in advance.

Applying for a B Visa

B visa applicants must apply at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate abroad. There is no specific visa document from Clemson, but a departmental invitation letter should outline:

  • Purpose and duration of visit
  • Non-salaried status and independent funding
  • Visitor’s occupation and home country ties
  • Return travel plans
  • Statement of non-collaborative nature
  • If applicable, mention of honorarium

Extensions

B visa holders may apply to extend their stay with USCIS using Form I-539. The reason must align with the original purpose of the visit. Clemson’s Immigration Services can advise on this process.

Inviting Family or Friends

(e.g., for Commencement)

Most visitors will need to apply for a B-2 tourist visa. They should be prepared to show:

  1. The visit is temporary.
  2. They have funds for their stay.
  3. They intend to return home.

Suggested documents:

  • Invitation letter from you
  • Enrollment verification from Clemson Registrar
  • Bank statements (yours or theirs)
  • Evidence of home country ties (job, family, property)

Note: Visitors from VWP countries and Canadian citizens do not need a visa, but VWP travelers must obtain ESTA before travel.
