International Students
Immigration Services (IS) supports international students throughout their Clemson journey, from admission through graduation. We provide the immigration documents needed to apply for a U.S. visa and enter the United States. Throughout your time at Clemson, our staff is available to provide guidance on maintaining your immigration status, employment opportunities and authorization, international travel and visa requirements. Our goal is to help you understand your responsibilities, navigate immigration requirements with confidence, and make the most of your Clemson experience.

Step 1: Request Your Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 or DS-2019)
After admission, Immigration Services (IS) will be notified and will receive copies of your admissions documents. We will email you instructions on how to Request an I-20 or DS-2019 Certificate of Eligibility (PDF).
Once your completed request for a Certificate of Eligibility is submitted, our office will enter your information into the SEVIS system and produce Form I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1). Please allow 10 business days for processing. When ready, your immigration document and supporting materials will be sent via email.

Step 2: Review Key Deadlines
To ensure timely visa processing, submit all materials by:
- Spring term: November 15
- Summer term: April 1
- Fall term: July 1
- Transfer students: Submit your request before the first of classes in their expected start term.

Step 3: Apply for your Visa
Schedule a Visa Interview
After receiving your I-20 or DS-2019, you need to schedule an appointment at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Please visit the U.S. Department of State website to locate a consulate and view visa processing details.
Pay the I-901 SEVIS Fee
For all F-1 and J-1 applicants, you must pay the I-901 SEVIS Fee at least 3 business days before your visa interview. Learn more about the I-901 SEVIS Fee and how to pay.
Note: Canadian citizens do not need a visa, but must still pay the SEVIS Fee before entering the U.S.

Step 4: Plan Your Arrival
As a new international student, you may enter the U.S. up to 30 days before the program start date listed on the I-20 (Section 5) or DS-2019 (Section 3). Check the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Study in the States website to understand what to expect at your U.S. port of entry.
New students are required to attend the new international student orientation, Roar and Explore.

Step 5: Stay Informed
We encourage early arrival to secure housing, register for courses and complete the necessary paperwork for on-campus employment, if applicable. Your academic department may have orientation activities that occur in the week(s) leading up to the beginning of the semester. Be sure to regularly check emails sent to your Clemson email account, as University departments use email for all official communication.
