Dependents of F and J Students
Immigration Services can assist international students in F-1 or J-1 status in inviting their eligible dependents —defined as a spouse or unmarried child under age 21— to join them in the U.S. under F-2 or J-2 status.
Key Differences
F-2 Dependents
- Pursue degree-seeking courses part-time, but are not allowed to pursue full-time degree programs.
- Ineligible to obtain employment authorization while in the U.S.
- Children in F-2 status may attend primary, middle or high school in the U.S. as long as the F-1 maintains their status.
If you are in F-1 status and wish to invite your dependent, please ensure they are aware of these stipulations.
J-2 Dependents
- Part-time or full-time degree-seeking coursework.
- May apply for employment authorization from the USCIS.
How to Invite a Dependent
- Submit a Request for Dependent I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1).
- Include required financial documentation:
- F-1 students: Proof of funding for one academic year.
- J-1 students: Proof of funding for the entire DS-2019 program period.
- Once processed, send your dependent the I-20/DS-2019 and financial documents to apply for their F-2 or J-2 visa.
