Travel and Visas for F and J Visa Holders

Automatic Visa Revalidation (AVR)

If you travel to Canada, Mexico, or an adjacent island for less than 30 days with an expired U.S. visa, you may be eligible for automatic visa revalidation. Review guidance from the Department of State and consult an Immigration Services Advisor if considering this option.

To successfully re-enter the U.S., you must show you are maintaining your visa status and returning for the visa's purpose. Have the following in your carry-on luggage:

• Valid Passport: Must have at least six months of validity remaining to re-enter, unless you hold citizenship with certain countries.
• Non-expired F-1 or J-1 Visa: (or F-2/J-2 visa for dependents).
• Valid I-20 or DS-2019 Form: With a travel signature.

   

  Specifics for Visa Holders

  • Enrolled F-1 Students: I-20 travel signature no older than one year. Include a copy of your unofficial transcript. If between terms, obtain proof of enrollment.
  • F-1 Students on OPT: High-risk travel without an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) or current OPT employment. Delays or disruptions may occur. If your OPT application is pending, postpone international travel until you have your EAD and job offer letter. I-20 form must show OPT request approved, current employer info, and DSO travel authorization no more than six months old. Also, bring your valid EAD and job offer letter.
  • F-2 Dependents: Valid F-2 I-20 form with a travel signature no older than one year. Dependents of F-1 students on OPT need a travel signature no older than six months, a copy of the F-1's I-20 with approved OPT and current employer info, and a copy of the F-1's valid EAD.
  • J-1 Students and Scholars: DS-2019 travel signature no older than one year. Include a copy of your unofficial transcript. If between terms, obtain proof of enrollment.
  • J-1 Students on Academic Training: DS-2019 form with a travel signature no older than six months and academic training authorization. Bring a job offer letter.
  • J-1 Research Scholars/Professors, etc.: DS-2019 form with a travel signature no older than one year. Bring your Clemson University Invitation Letter.
  • J-2 Dependents: DS-2019 form with a travel signature no older than six months. Dependents of J-1 students on Academic Training need a copy of the J-1's valid DS-2019 with Academic Training authorization.

A travel signature from Immigration Services on your I-20 or DS-2019 certifies you are maintaining non-immigrant visa status for re-entry. U.S. government officials will review this signature at the Port of Entry or when applying for a new visa abroad.

Valid travel signatures are required to enter the U.S. Without one, expect travel delays or disruptions. If you forget to get an updated signature before leaving, you must request shipping of an updated I-20 or DS-2019.

A visa is an entry document allowing you to enter the U.S.. The electronic I-94 Arrival Departure Record grants permission to remain for the Duration of Status (D/S).

If your visa expires while you are in the U.S. and you don't plan to travel internationally, you are eligible to remain in the U.S.. However, if your visa expires or will expire while traveling internationally, you must apply for a new U.S. visa to return.

Steps to Renew Your Visa (Abroad)

1. Prepare Documents: Update financial support on your I-20 or DS-2019. Print a copy of your academic transcript. Request an enrollment verification letter from 102 Sikes Hall.
2. Contact U.S. Embassy/Consulate: You cannot obtain a new visa inside the U.S.. Contact the S. Embassy before making travel arrangements. If applying in a third country, ensure they process visas for citizens from your country of origin.
