Overview

Faculty Insight empowers faculty to uncover funding opportunities and identify subject matter experts at Clemson and provides them with a comprehensive, editable pre-populated research profile.

Faculty Insight replaces the previous Research Expertise Discovery Suite (REDS) with new features. It was developed in partnership with Academic Analytics and reflects the campus-wide need for increased data transparency and tools to foster interdisciplinary collaboration.

This next generation REDS site contains data from multiple sources for a more accurate and complete view of Clemson research. In addition to being pre-populated with Academic Analytics data, the site has been augmented with grant data from Clemson’s Office of Sponsored Programs, and faculty now have an easy interface with which to edit their own profiles, including adding new activity and editing existing activity.

In addition to discovering institutional expertise, Faculty Insight provides targeted funding opportunities for specific faculty and by keyword search. Faculty profile keywords are matched to funding opportunity data from a third-party funding database. Grant opportunities are updated daily and contain roughly 40,000 open funding opportunities from more than 10,000 public and private entities.

Faculty Insight Academic Analytics is receptive to feedback on this product and will be rolling out enhancements based on this feedback in the coming year.

Quick Tips


  • Searching with multiple words, such as stellar lithium, will identify Clemson faculty associated with the titles and abstracts of books, articles, or conference proceedings containing stellar OR lithium
  • Use quotation marks to create an AND search (i.e. "stellar lithium"). More extensive information on search queries can be found on the Apache page.
  • When the collaboration map appears, click the "Collaboration Map Key" link in the top-left menu to view a legend for the map.
  • You can move the map in any direction by left-clicking the map, dragging, and dropping (similar Google Maps). You can zoom in or out by whatever means you use to scroll.

  • What's the difference between Faculty and REDS?
    Whereas REDS was only populated with one source of data, Faculty Insight pulls data from multiple sources for a far more accurate and complete view of Clemson research. In addition, Faculty Insight provides targeted grant opportunities.
  • What is Faculty Insight and what is it used for?
    Faculty Insight is a search tool for faculty members to find experts at their institution and targeted funding opportunities. Faculty member profiles are pre-populated with recent activity data sourced from Academic Analytics and Clemson’s research office. This includes articles, books, grants, awards, conference proceedings, and patents. In addition to being able to make corrections and additions to their data, faculty members can also add additional activity not currently captured.
  • How does the keyword search work?
    The keyword search uses natural language processing techniques and targeted algorithms to compare keyword(s) against profile data and identify relevant scholars and grant opportunities.
  • How do you determine a faculty member's key terms?
    Academic Analytics generates a set of key research terms for each faculty member by comparing productivity data for a given faculty member against all available productivity data. The more times a term appears in a specific faculty member’s productivity data, relative to the number of times the term appears in all productivity data in the collection, the more closely associated the term is to the faculty member.
  • Are these data used to evaluate me?
    The purpose of Faculty Insight is to encourage and facilitate collaboration among faculty members at Clemson University. With over 100 centers and institutes, interdisciplinary research and academic activity are an integral part of scholarship at Clemson. Faculty Insight can help faculty members find collaboration opportunities with Clemson colleagues.
  • How do I edit my profile?
    Faculty members can edit their profiles by going to My Profile in the top left corner menu in Faculty Insight. To add or edit a Research Summary, Research Interest, or Keywords, click the edit icon (pencil and paper) in the top left of the My Profile window. To add academic activity, click the plus sign in the top right of the My Profile window and select the type of activity to get started. Faculty may request changes to Academic Analytics data by clicking the source link and sending an email to the product quality team.
  • Where is the data in my pre-populated profile coming from?
    Academic Analytics compiles data from federal, university, and private sources. Article and Conference Proceeding publication data are obtained directly from publishers, using digital object identifiers (DOI). Citation data are derived via DOI-to-DOI linkages based on the literature-cited section of published journal articles and conference proceedings. Book data are collected from a variety of sources, including Baker and Taylor. Grant data is collected from federal granting agencies, and augmented with data provided by Clemson’s office of sponsored programs. Patent data are obtained from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, as well as the World Intellectual Property Organization. Honorific Award information is derived from publicly available information from governing societies. Performance and Exhibit data can be added directly to Faculty Insight by faculty members.
  • Why are some items missing from my profile and how do I fix it?
    Academic Analytics continually updates its faculty activity data, but faculty members are encouraged to manually augment their profile using the editing tool available in the “My Profile” view by clicking on the plus sign in the top right of the My Profile box.
  • Where do the funding opportunities come from?
