Employment Opportunities

Clemson started with a graduating class of 37 in 1896. Today, Clemson University has become a strong force in higher education and gained national recognition in areas from academics to athletics. Throughout the past decade, the University has consistently been ranked among the top 25 public institutions by U.S. News & World Report. During this time, the number of student admission applications and prospective employee applications have almost doubled, and the number of graduate degrees awarded has more than doubled.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy currently has more than 25 faculty members who teach and do research in a broad range of sub-fields, including astrophysics, atomic physics, atmospheric physics, biophysics, condensed matter physics and foundational quantum mechanics. Many of our faculty are well known nationally and internationally.

It’s a great time to be a Clemson Tiger, and it’s a great time to be part of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Current Faculty Openings

Assistant Professor, Space Physics

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Clemson University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the field of space physics, to start in 2025. The position is initially funded by the NSF Faculty Development in geoSpace Science (FDSS) program.

The department is seeking applications from individuals with expertise in magnetosphere-ionosphere-atmosphere coupling, from either modeling or data analysis/experiment. The successful candidate is expected to complement the atmosphere-ionosphere expertise of the existing space physics group by adding magnetosphere-ionosphere expertise and to educate the next generation of leaders in the space sciences.

Assistant Professor, Medical Biophysics

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Clemson University seeks candidates for a tenure-track, assistant professor position in experimental biophysics starting August 2025. The successful applicant will develop a research program at the frontier of biological physics/biophysics relevant to health-related sciences, contribute to developing the medical biophysics M.S. and Ph.D. program, and complement and extend existing research strengths.

The successful applicant will join a thriving Physics department with internationally-recognized, cutting-edge programs in experimental, computational and theoretical biological physics; single molecule biophysics; advanced materials; condensed matter theory; astrophysics; atmospheric and space physics; and experimental and theoretical quantum physics.
