Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy

  • Ph.D., Physics, University of Bonn, Bonn, Germany
  • M.S., Physics, University of Bonn, Bonn, Germany

Areas of Research

Atmospheric and Space Physics

Dr. Lehmacher’s group uses NASA sounding rockets and the high-power large aperture radar at Jicamarca, Peru to investigate gravity wave breaking, instabilities and turbulence in the mesosphere, lower thermosphere and ionosphere. We also use Direct Simulation Monte Carlo methods to model the flow conditions surrounding supersonic payloads to correct in situ density measurements. The research will improve our understanding of fundamental neutral-ion processes and wave coupling in the upper atmosphere.
