International Adventure Trip

Visit Dominica with us May 8-22, 2027!

Dominica, often called “The Nature Island,” exemplifies both the promise and the challenges of nature-based, sustainable tourism. Known for its volcanic landscapes, rich biodiversity, and community-based tourism initiatives, Dominica provides critical lessons about balancing conservation with economic opportunity, and about how sustainable tourism can contribute to global discussions on development, equity, and resilience.

In this immersive study abroad experience on the island of Dominica, students will examine the ecological, cultural, and economic dimensions of sustainable tourism. The course will use Dominica as a living classroom, allowing participants to explore the ways local communities, governments, and international organizations collaborate to advance ecotourism initiatives.

Through fieldwork, site visits, classroom lectures, interactive workshops, and direct engagement with community partners, students will gain insight into both the successes and tensions of sustainable tourism development. This course offers a unique opportunity to witness firsthand how ecotourism and sustainable tourism can simultaneously foster environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and economic livelihoods while also presenting ongoing challenges in a globalized world.

Students will have the unique opportunity to kayak the length of the Waitukubuli National Sea Trail. The sea trail is a first of its kind trail traveling 40 miles along the rugged coast line of Dominica and is the result of a joint public sector/private sector partnership. Along the way we will stay in coastal villages and hear from government officials, outfitters, community leaders and others who helped make this eco tourism experience a reality.
