What is CORE?
The Clemson University Outdoor Recreation and Education Program provides the Clemson University community with opportunities to participate in a variety of outdoor adventure activities. Trips and instructional programs are scheduled throughout the year and include adventure activities such as: backpacking, whitewater rafting, paddleboarding, sea kayaking, skiing, and mountain biking. Trips are designed for every skill level, from the beginner to the advanced adventurer. In addition to these programs, CORE also provides an outdoor equipment rental service, resource library, & bike shop and staff who can serve as knowledgeable resources to help people plan their own adventure trips.

What kinds of trips does CORE offer?
We provide a variety of trips, with trip lengths ranging from partial day trips, weekend trips, to multi-day trips throughout the Southeast. We also have events focusing on meeting new people as well as trips devoted to learning various technical skills, such as backpacking, mountain biking, or paddling.

Who can participate in CORE trips?
A person may register for a trip if they have an active Campus Recreation membership. Visit our Member Services page for more information on memberships. Trip size is limited and registration is on a first–come, first–serve basis.

How do I register for a CORE trip?
To register for a trip online:
- Navigate to our online registration portal
- Click on the trip you want to register for
- Log in with your Clemson username and password
- Click Select next to the offering you want to reigster for
- Accept any waivers and acknowledgements

Please visit the front desk at the Andy Quattlebaum Outdoor Education Center during our normal hours of operation.
Trips are scheduled during Fall, Spring and Summer Semesters. If you missed one this semester look for similar trip offerings next semester. Don't forget to register well in advance as trips fill quickly!

I registered for a trip, what now?
After registering, you will receive information detailing what you should, and can, bring on your trip. If you have further questions about bringing your personal gear, please email us outside@clemson.edu. For overnight trips, participants are expected to attend a mandatory pre-trip meeting.

What is your cancellation/refund policy?
Trip Cancellation & Location Change Policy:
Trip locations and activities may change due to a variety of reasons including, but not limited to: inclement weather, natural disasters, operational concerns, or other extenuating circumstances. CORE prioritizes participant safety and reserves the right to make necessary adjustments to ensure a safe and meaningful experience. All efforts will be made to run scheduled trips, change of location or activity may occur.
Single-day Trips:
- Full Refund:In the event a single-day trip is cancelled by CORE, participants will receive a full refund.
- No Refund: In the event a single-day trip location is changed, participants will not receive a refund.
Multi-Day Trips:
- Full Refund: In the event a multi-day trip is cancelled by CORE, participants will receive a full refund, minus the non-refundable deposit, will be issued.
- No Refund: In the event a multi-day trip location or activity is changed, participants will not receive a refund.
Trip Refund Policy:
Participants are responsible for understanding the cancellation and refund policy for the CORE trip(s) they are registering for. CORE does not issue refunds for trips that are not attended. CORE reserves the right to not issue a refund at the discretion of the program administrators.
Single-day Trips:
- Full Refund: Registrants who cancel more than 10 business days before the date of the trip.
- No Refund: Registrants who cancel fewer than 10 business days before the trip's departure, regardless of the circumstances.
Multi-day Trips:
- Full Refund (minus non-refundable deposit fees): Registrants who cancel more than 45 days before the scheduled trip departure date.
- No Refund: Registrants who cancel fewer than 45 days before the scheduled trip departure date. A refund may be given after this time if a replacement can be found from the trip’s waitlist.
Outdoor adventure activities can be exciting and rewarding, but may also be physically demanding and potentially dangerous. While our highest priority is given to safety, participants need to be aware of the inherent risks associated with participation in outdoor recreation activities, as well as the responsibility they assume for their own safety and well-being. Participants are responsible for medical or other costs arising out of bodily injury, illness, or property damage that may be sustained as a result of their voluntary participation, and they are required to sign a Release and Waiver of Liability/Informed Consent.

General Expectations by Activity
Camping
- You should be able to live and function in an outdoor camp setting without electricity for the duration of the trip. No prior camping experience is required
Hiking
- Walk continuously for 1 mile at a moderate pace over uneven terrain, unassisted, while carrying a small backpack of approximately (10–15 lbs).
Backpacking
- Meet camping and hiking criteria plus:
- Walk continuously for 1 mile over uneven terrain with a large pack (35–40 lbs), then repeat after a short rest (15–30 minutes). The typical day average is between 5-8 miles.
- Be comfortable without access to advanced medical care for the duration of the backpacking portion.
Ocean Paddling
- Be able to swim and feel comfortable in and around moving water.
- Sit in a kayak for several hours and paddle 5–10 miles per day for multiple days.
- Be prepared to enter/exit a kayak in open water if needed.
Inland Paddling
- Comfortable in and around moving water.
- Sit in a boat for several hours and paddle 5–10 miles in a day.
- Able to re-enter a watercraft from the water if necessary.
Mountain Biking
- Ride a bike comfortably on uneven terrain.
- Complete a 5-mile ride with minimal breaks.

What should I pack/bring on a CORE trip?
CORE provides all the equipment that you’ll need for the trip except personal clothing, sturdy hiking shoes, and any prescribed medication. Participants will be provided with a packing list prior to their trip’s departure.

Do I need prior experience to participate?
Most of our trips do not require prior experience in the activity. However, all participants must meet a baseline level of physical fitness and be able to perform certain tasks to ensure safety and enjoyment for everyone.

How much do CORE trips cost?
Cost varies from trip to trip. Your fee covers instruction, equipment, transportation, and food on overnight excursions. Payment can be accepted online through our online registration portal or in-person at the Andy Quattlebaum Outdoor Education Center. Who leads CORE trips?
CORE employs student staff to serve as trip leaders for our trips. All of our trip leaders hold a Wilderness First Aid certification, leadership training, and training specific to the activity they are leading.

Will I have access to my phone/wifi on the trip?
Participants should expect to not have access to cell phone service on trips. CORE highly encourages participants to refrain from cell phone usage and connect with those around them. Trip leaders carry satellite phones for emergency situations.
