Instructor Responsibilities

Instructors are responsible for:

  • Communicating with students and Student Accessibility Services (SAS) throughout the semester if they have questions regarding access needs.
  • Ensuring accommodations are implemented in a timely manner.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of student information.
  • Including a syllabus statement from Student Accessibility Services.
  • Ensuring instructional materials are in accessible formats.

Instructor Limitations

Instructors may not:

  • Ask students for confidential documentation of their disability. Deny a student an accommodation that is listed on their Faculty Notification Letter.
  • Ask students questions about their disability including their diagnosis or nature of their disability.
  • Disclose details about a student’s disability to anyone, unless there is an educational need to know (i.e. testing coordinator for department, Teaching Assistant, etc.).

Recommended Syllabus Statement

“Clemson University values the diversity of our student body as a strength and a critical component of our dynamic community. Students with disabilities or temporary injuries/conditions may require accommodations due to barriers in the structure of facilities, course design, technology used for curricular purposes or other campus resources. If a student is registered with Student Accessibility Services, they are strongly encouraged to send Faculty Notification Letters to their professors as early in the semester as possible so that accommodations can be made in a timely manner. Students who experience a barrier to equal access in class should let the professor know and make an appointment to meet with a staff member in SAS as soon as possible. Students can schedule an appointment by calling 864-656-6848, by emailing or by visiting Suite 239 in the Academic Success Center building. For more information, visit Student Accessibility Services online. ”
