Why Pre-Business?
Pre-Business is the starting point in the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business for all Clemson students pursuing undergraduate business degrees in accounting, economics (B.S.), financial management, management or marketing. Every student begins here to build a shared academic foundation and explore the full range of business disciplines before selecting a major.
First-year business students majoring in graphic communications or economics (B.A.) are not part of the Pre-Business program. These majors follow their own academic pathways and can learn more about their curriculum on their respective departmental pages.
This first year is designed to help students make an informed decision about their program of study, strengthen their transition to Clemson and set the stage for a successful and meaningful Clemson Experience.
Building a Strong Foundation
BUS 1010, Business Foundations
BUS 1010 is the launchpad for business students. This one-credit course introduces new students to every business major, key on-campus resources, and the professional expectations that define the College.
Students gain exposure to:
- Degree pathways across the business disciplines
- Academic advising and success resources
- Business ethics
- Internships, co-ops, and study-abroad opportunities
- Student organizations and engagement
- ePortfolios and career preparation
- Clemson's history and culture
Each semester features a panel of business alumni and presentations from leaders across the College's centers and institutes, providing students with direct insight into business in action.
In conjunction with this introductory course, Pre-Business students also enter the first-year student curriculum, which can be found through the Academic Advising Office.
The Path Ahead
After completing the Pre-Business year, students transition into their chosen major and continue developing professionally through two additional courses:
- BUS 2010, Business Professionalism: Prepares students to secure internships and begin building their professional presence.
- BUS 3010, Business Ethics: Explores the role of business in society and provides students with persuasive writing and ethical decision-making skills.
These experiences help students move from exploration to specialization, building both confidence and clarity as they advance through their degree.
Student Perspective
The Clemson pre-business program opened many career avenues for success in my chosen major. The faculty prepared me for the challenges of the business industry and, to this day, continues to advise me in my decisions. - Brandon McLoyd, Economics
