Profile

Dr. Lauren Duffy is an Associate Professor and the Undergraduate Coordinator in the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management at Clemson University. Her research program is grounded within critical leisure and tourism studies and her published work has focused on a number of topics including: issues of power in tourism planning and development, rural and community-based tourism planning, tourism and conservation, gender and feminist epistemologies, political economy and neoliberal economic structures, local food systems and food socialization, and resident-tourist relationships.

Dr. Duffy has also spent time writing about issues related to the production of knowledge, critical thinking, global learning, transformative learning, and internationalization. Her field work has taken her across rural communities in South and North Carolina as well as Central and South America, the Caribbean, and southern Africa.

She is currently a fellow with Tourism RESET, and the Institute for Parks and has previously served as a Clemson Critical Thinking Fellow, a Clemson Forward Fellow to help support the university strategic planning efforts, and a Charles E. Hartsoe Fellow with the National Recreation Foundation.

She is President of The Academy of Leisure Sciences (2021-2024).

In 2022-2023, she was a U.S. Fulbright Scholar in Saint Lucia, working with Sir Arthur Lewis Community College in their Department of Sustainable Tourism and Hospitality.
