School of Computing Academic Programs

Computing includes the design and development of software and hardware systems and the study of how people and organizations use and benefit from these systems. Offered within the School of Computing at Clemson is an internationally recognized faculty that prides itself on the quality of its teaching and a wide range of research areas.

  • 3 undergraduate degrees
  • 2 undergraduate minors
  • 7 graduate degree programs

Undergraduate Programs

The School of Computing offers three undergraduate programs of study: an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science suited for double majors and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems for students who seek business education along with computing. Three minors are available, a minor in Computer Science, Digital Production Arts, and Cybersecurity.

All computing undergraduate majors take a common computing core curriculum, which exposes students to a variety of programming languages (e.g., C, C++, and Java) and fundamental concepts. Each degree then builds on the core with a different combination of additional coursework.

Technical electives are offered in many areas, and new ones are created regularly to meet the dynamic changing field of computing. Examples of electives include virtual reality, human and computer interaction, eye-tracking methodology, applied data science, 2D game engine construction, mobile device software development, usable privacy and security, computer security principles, system administration and security, cloud computing, and distributed and cluster computing.

Graduate Programs

Graduates of our ABET-accredited B.S. CS programs are especially well-prepared for graduate study at institutions across the globe, and many find opportunities at Clemson. The School of Computing offers seven graduate programs in Computer Science, Human-Centered Computing, Digital Production Arts, and Biomedical Data Science and Informatics.

Program Resources

School of Computing majors have access to four dedicated instructional computer labs with 24-hour building access. In addition, specialized equipment is available for advanced courses, including virtual reality headsets, motion capture, green screen, and the Internet of Things. High-performance computing and data analytics facilities are available through the Clemson Palmetto supercomputer.

Computing clubs and organizations include the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), CU Cyber, CU Hackit, Girls Who Code – Clemson College Loops, International Society of Blacks in Computing (ISBIC). Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE), School of Computing Graduate Student Association (SOCGSA), and Clemson Association for Information Systems (AIS).

Recent School of Computing students have studied in various countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Germany, South Africa, England, Ireland, Germany, the Republic of Cyprus, and Japan. The College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences’ Global Engagement is available to assist students in determining a study abroad location best suited for their interests.

Many undergraduates and graduates participate in paid or unpaid research projects in the School of Computing. Students can find opportunities by talking directly with faculty and via the School of Computing job board. Some projects begin as course projects or are taken for academic credit through Creative Inquiry. We highly encourage students who are considering graduate study to participate in at least one research project as an undergraduate

Internships and Professional Employment

We are regularly contacted by companies seeking interns and candidates for professional employment. 79% of students in the Spring 2018 exit survey participated in at least one internship. Career opportunities include software engineering, project management, technical consulting, networking engineering, software analysis, data science, cloud computing specialist, Internet of Things development, and AI.
