Intro to Flexo Workshop
Workshop Overview
This class is geared toward individuals who need a fundamental understanding of the flexographic printing process. It is taught by mixing hands-on training and formal instruction in a flexo printing environment. Graduate the class with an understanding of the function of flexography in the printing industry and all elements required for your company to produce a finished product, including layout, trapping and distortion, plate-making, proofing, ink station setup, ink maintenance, press operation and quality control.

Day 1
8:30 a.m. - Program overview and introductions
8:45 a.m. - Presentation Print 101: Major print processes, flexo press configurations and print terminology.
9:45 a.m. - Break
10 a.m. - Presentation Inks, Anilox, and Doctor Blades: Ink types and properties, anilox roll specifications and doctor blade configurations.
11 a.m. - Hands-on Print Banded Anilox: Ink preparation, anilox selection and pressmanship.
12 p.m. - Lunch
1 p.m. - Presentation density and tone value: Ink density and tone value measurement, dot gain and compensation curves.
1:45 p.m. - Hands-on evaluation of banded test: Measure the effect of LPI and anilox volume on color strength and dot gain.
2:15 p.m. - Presentation flexographic platemaking: Various workflows for making a flexographic printing plate.
3 p.m. - Demo platemaking: Image, expose and process a plate for the next day's two-color press run.
3:45 p.m. - End of day
Day 2
8:30 a.m. - Hands-on 2-Color Press Run on OMET: Set-up, ink preparation, setting print impression, registration color-to-color and press clean-up.
10:30 a.m. - Presentation defining and measuring color: Additive vs subtractive color, color measurement systems and Delta E comparison.
12:15 p.m. - Lunch
1:15 p.m. - Hands-on measure 2-color samples: Use spectrophotometers to measure and compare color from the 2-color press run.
2 p.m. - Presentation press optimization and characterization: Creating optimized print conditions and conducting a press characterization.
2:45 p.m. - Demo prepress for 4-color art file: Prepare a 4-color design file for print using ArtPro and Esko Pilot.
3:45 p.m. - End of day
Day 3
8:30 a.m. - Hands-on plate mounting: Apply stickyback and mount plates to sleeves.
9:30 a.m. - Hands-on 4-color press run on OMET: Print CMYK job on press, color control for process printing.
11 a.m. - Presentation/hands-on flexo print defects: Discuss common print defects and examine 4-color print samples.
11:45 a.m. - Recap, questions and survey
12 p.m. - End of day
