Apply to CE Program

The Glenn Department of Civil Engineering is one of four named civil engineering departments in the country. The program has been an integral part of Clemson since the University was founded in 1889, with the first civil engineering degree awarded in 1896. Students work closely with faculty, peers and industry on hands-on research projects that prepare them to work domestically and abroad within one of the most in-demand engineering fields.

Information on admission requirements, financial assistance, and academic policies and procedures as a student in CE can be found in the catalog and handbook.

Combined B.S. to M.S. Program

The B.S./M.S. program in Civil Engineering provides eligible undergraduate students (3.4 GPA or higher) with the opportunity to get a head-start on graduate studies by allowing them to use a limited number of graduate courses to satisfy requirements for both the B.S. and M.S. degrees.

The civil engineering faculty envision students enrolled in this combined degree program will typically complete six hours of graduate credit while completing their B.S. degree. The remaining requirements for an M.S. degree would be completed in one calendar year or less of graduate study.

  • Program Guidelines
    • Consult with an advisor in your intended area of graduate study before taking any graduate-level courses.
    • The graduate courses taken as an undergraduate student will be listed in your graduate Plan of Study.
    • Students in the B.S./M.S. program are conditionally accepted to the graduate program pending the completion of the B.S. degree.
    • Typically, courses taken as a B.S./M.S. student are not transferable to other programs, either at Clemson or other schools.
    • B.S./M.S. students in their final undergraduate semester may also take a limited number of 6000-level or 8000-level courses to be used for future graduate credit only.
  • Requirements to Complete Both Degrees
    1. Undergraduate students must have an overall GPR of 3.4 or better and must have completed the junior year prior to taking graduate courses. Students are required to maintain this minimum GPR to continue enrollment in a combined degree program.
    2. Up to 6 semester hours from any 6000-level or 8000-level Civil Engineering course may be used to satisfy the requirements of their BS degree. These courses will be counted as technical electives.
    3. Graduate courses taken by an undergraduate may also be included in the graduate program of study. However, since approval of the program of study by the student's graduate advisory committee is required, students should consult with their academic advisors before selecting courses to be included in their graduate program.
  • Applying to the B.S. to M.S. Program

Students interested in this combined degree program should consult Kristi Baker, Graduate Student Services Manager, and the Civil Engineering Honors Coordinator (if applicable). Students pursuing an optional emphasis area in their undergraduate degree program may substitute 6000-level courses for any 4000-level counterpart taken to meet the requirements of an emphasis area.

Application for this program should be made by the end of the junior year, but no later than one semester prior to expected B.S. graduation. Application details are available in the Academic Regulations section of the Graduate School Announcements.

    How to Apply

The GS6-Bachelor-to-Graduate Plan form will serve as your application to the civil engineering graduate program – no additional application is required. However, while the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is not mandatory, some fellowship applications may require GRE scores.

Additional information concerning deadlines and program contacts can be found on the Civil Engineering Graduate Admissions page.
