Build Your Expertise in History
Develop the research, writing, and analytical skills to pursue your goals in a wide variety of careers
The M.A. in History offers courses across a wide range of historical fields. Students develop specialized knowledge in the areas of their choosing, with particular strength in U.S. history (especially the American South), as well as Britain, Europe, Russia, Latin America, Asia, and Africa.
The degree builds the foundational skills of the discipline such as close reading, critical thinking, argumentation, and the synthesis of complex evidence. Historical and critical thinking skills such as these are increasingly vital in a world of information overload and artificial intelligence. These skills prepare graduates for careers in teaching, public history, government service, law, archival management, and business, and provide a strong foundation for doctoral study. Students in Clemson's Department of History and Geography also benefit from proximity to the nation's first Ph.D. program in Digital History, with informal opportunities to explore digital methods and computational approaches to the past.
Applications for Fall 2027 are due January 15, 2027. For more information about the M.A. in History, please contact the Director of Graduate Studies, Dr. Amanda Regan at aeregan@clemson.edu.
