Profile/About Me
Md. Sameul Islam is a Ph.D. student in Biological Sciences at Clemson University. He earned his B.S. in Fisheries from Bangladesh Agricultural University and his M.S. in Marine and Environmental Biology from Nicholls State University. His research interests broadly focus on environmental toxicology, developmental biology, aquatic ecology, and the biological impacts of environmental contaminants.
His research experience spans both aquatic and microbial systems. During his undergraduate research, he investigated the effects of environmental stressors, including microplastics, pesticides, heavy metals, temperature, and salinity, on fish physiology, growth, oxidative stress, immune responses, and tissue health. His master’s research focused on the microbial biodegradation of the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole under different metabolic conditions, integrating microbiology with environmental biotechnology and analytical approaches.
At Clemson, Sameul is expanding his research experience into developmental and molecular biology, with interests in understanding how environmental contaminants influence development, cellular processes, gene regulation, and organismal health. He is particularly interested in integrating environmental toxicology with molecular, developmental, and multi-omics approaches to better understand how environmental stressors affect biological systems.
Beyond research, Sameul has been actively involved in teaching, mentoring, environmental outreach, and community-based activities. He currently serves as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for General Biology Laboratory at Clemson University and is passionate about connecting research, education, and environmental sustainability.
