Recycling 101 Seminar

Recycling 101 aims to provide a baseline understanding for those in the packaging industry eager to learn more about recycling and sustainable packaging. This 1.5-day course will be held in person with a variety of expertise from faculty and industry speakers, as well as hands-on activities. The course will cover terminology, processes, materials, challenges, misconceptions, government regulations and new technologies. Recycling 101 is perfect for packaging designers, packaging buyers, account representatives, brand owners and anyone looking to gain a better understanding of the complexities of sustainable packaging.

Lizzy Anast

Lizzy Anast
Sustainability Coordinator, Clemson University

Lizzy Anast is the Sustainability Coordinator at Clemson University who specializes in waste diversion. She has a business degree in marketing and sales, and a master's in sustainability planning and management. Anast has a vast knowledge of how municipal recycling facilities operate and the common challenges associated with processing materials. ln her current role, she is working to increase diversion rates on campus by providing education to all faculty, staff and students.

Heather Batt

Heather Batt, Ph.D.
Senior Lecturer, Food, Nutrition and Packaging Sciences Department, Clemson University

Heather Batt, Ph.D., is a Senior Lecturer who has been teaching at Clemson University since 2002. She has led courses in perishable products packaging, packaging and society, quantity and foods and an introduction to packaging. Her B.A. is in Anthropology from Princeton University and her Ph.D. is in Food Technology from Clemson University.

Dan Blackburn

Dan Blackburn
Senior Engineer, Packaging, Packaging Graphics Lead, Kimberly-Clark

Dan Blackburn is a 2011 graduate of Clemson University with a B.S. in Packaging Science. Currently, he presides on the Board of Directors for the Flexographic Technical Association and is an active committee leader and presenter. Blackburn worked on the converting side of the business as a Product Development Engineer and Technical Manager for Berry Global and Fortis Solutions Group (formerly Label Technology) prior to his current role as the Global Packaging Graphics Leader in the R&D Central Organization for Kimberly Clark Professional residing in Atlanta, GA, with his assistant #lindytheruffruff.

Sabrina Dixon-Ridges

Sabrina Dixon-Ridges
Global Sustainability Manager for Business Strategy Alignment, Sonoco Products Company

Sabrina Dixon-Ridges is the Global Sustainability Manager for Business Strategy Alignment at Sonoco Products Company, a global packaging solutions provider. As a proponent of End-of-Life solutions, she is passionate about the commercialization of new sustainable designs and champions initiatives to change the recycling infrastructure landscape to increase recycling rates of multi-material packaging around the globe. She received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of South Carolina and North Carolina State University, respectively.

Erik Groner

Erik Groner
Research Lead, Packaging R&D, Kraft Heinz Company

Erik Groner is a technical professional, with over 20 years of experience in the flexible packaging industry. His career has spanned the CPG and the flexible packaging converting industry. Groner's current position as an R&D Packaging Lead at Kraft Heinz leverages his expertise with new materials, laminations and printing. Groner holds a bachelor's degree in Packaging Science from Michigan State University.

Felix Hottenstein

Felix Hottenstein
Sales Director, MSS Inc.

Hottenstein received his Masters's Degree in Material Science Engineering from the Federal Polytechnical Institute in Zurich, Switzerland (ETHZ). For over 23 years, Hottenstein has been Sales Director for MSS Inc., a division of the CP Group. Based in Nashville, TN, MSS designs and manufactures optical sorting technology for all areas of the recycling and waste management industry.

Jacob Kiser

Jacob Kiser
Operations Coordinator, Clemson University

Jacob Kiser, operations coordinator for Clemson University, has been working with recycling services for over three years. Clemson has its own recycling and compost facilities that process all recycling and organic waste on campus, and Kiser manages the day-to-day operations of both.

Pat Marcondes

Pat Marcondes
Lecturer, Food, Nutrition and Packaging Sciences Department, Clemson University

Pat Marcondes teaches sophomore-level courses in materials manufacturing and container systems at Clemson University. She has a business degree in marketing research and a master's in Packaging Science when she researched cushioning materials evaluation. Prior to becoming a lecturer, Pat worked in the Center for Flexible Packaging at Clemson University for 11 years.

Linda Roman

Linda Roman
Head of Packaging Technology, Kraft Heinz Company

Linda Roman is an R&D professional, bringing over 25 years of experience in the Food and Beverage industry. The majority of her career has been spent driving packaging innovation and technology. In her current position, Roman is Head of Packaging Technology at the Kraft Heinz Company. She holds a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Florida.

Will Sagar

Will Sagar
Executive Director, Southeast Recycling Development Council

Sagar is the Executive Director of the Southeast Recycling Development Council. After selling the excavation business he built and operated for a decade, he was the Solid Waste Director for Transylvania County, NC for 16 years. Later with Henderson County, he started electronics collection and created a county energy accounting system. Sagar served as President of the Board of Directors of the Carolina Recycling Association. He also chaired the Board of The Free Clinic of Transylvania County and recently completed six years on the Board of Transylvania Vocational Services.
