Lesly A. Temesvari is an Alumni Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. She is currently serving as the Interim Associate Dean for Research in the College of Science. After post-doctoral work at the LSU Health Sciences Center, she joined Clemson’s faculty in 1999. She is a founding member of the Eukaryotic Pathogens Innovation Center (EPIC), a research group that is dedicated to understanding infectious diseases of global importance. Her own research focuses on characterizing virulence in the dysentery-causing human parasite, Entamoeba histolytica. Dr. Temesvari is the principal investigator on three National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants, including a $10.5 million center grant to EPIC. She has previously received grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA). Dr. Temesvari has served on numerous grant review panels at the NIH and NSF and, in 2010, held the Fulbright Chair in Research Methodology at the University of Siena in Siena, Italy

 Research Interests

The overall goal of the research in Dr. Temesvari's laboratory is to understand the pathogenesis of the human protozoan parasite, Entamoeba histolytica. This is the causative agent of amoebic dysentery and amoebic liver abscess; up to 50,000,000 people world-wide are infected annually. Secretion, phagocytosis, and parasite-host interactions are important virulence functions of E. histolytica. Thus, using state-of-art molecular, biochemical, genetic and cellular techniques, the Temesvari laboratory seeks to understand the virulence functions by studying (i) four Rab GTPases (master regulators of vesicle trafficking), (ii) several components of the PI 3-kinase signaling pathway, (iii) lipid rafts, and (iv) the stress-response in the pathogen. Insight gained through these studies may lead to rational design of novel anti-Entamoeba agents.
