South Carolina Sheep Project

Overview

This market project is one in which youth raise a market lamb. For more information about sheep projects in your area, please contact your local 4-H office.

Please note, that it is the responsibility of the youth and his/her family to secure a market lamb for the project.

Objectives

The objectives of the South Carolina 4-H Market Lamb Project are that youth will:

  • Set goals and plan activities and strategies to achieve those outcomes, even in the face of challenges.
  • Reflect on their yearly work by documenting their skill development and learning experiences.
  • Give back to their communities through educational and service activities.
  • Learn valuable skills in record keeping, financial management, and written communication.
  • Gain valuable life lessons by caring and providing for their 4-H market lamb.

Project Timeline

  • Project Registration Opens: May 1, 2022
  • Project Registration Closes: June 1, 2022
  • Farm Visits: July - August
  • Skillathon: October 23rd (Held at State Fair)
  • Show Season: August - November
  • Record Book Due: January 31, 2023

Record Books

  • Record books are to be completed by the youth throughout the course of the project and submitted no later than December 31, 2023.
  • Record books are age appropriate: Cloverbuds (ages 5-8), Juniors (9-13), and Seniors (ages 14-18). Ages are determined January 1, 2022.

Note: A one-time $15 4-H membership fee is required per year per participant. With the membership, youth will receive a t-shirt as well as access to everything else 4-H has to offer. If you are not already a member, contact your local 4-H Extension Agent. You must remain an active 4-H member throughout the entirety of the project. The 4-H year begins on September 1 and ends on August 31 annually. Membership may be renewed by visiting  https://v2.4honline.com
