Advancing Research
CBSHS is committed to building healthy communities across South Carolina and beyond.
Building Healthy Communities is a College-wide initiative within the College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences (CBSHS) focused on improving community health and well-being across South Carolina. The initiative combines interdisciplinary research, scholarly engagement, community partnerships and student learning to address the complex societal, economic, environmental and health-related factors that influence quality of life for individuals and communities.
Key focus areas and projects are identified based on the social determinants of health. Together, these projects demonstrate CBSHS's interdisciplinary and community-engaged approach to research. By connecting faculty expertise, experiential learning and community partnerships, Building Healthy Communities seeks to translate research into practical solutions that expand access to resources and services, strengthen communities and improve health and well-being across South Carolina and beyond.
Statewide Outreach
Building Healthy Communities provides a strong foundation for statewide outreach by translating research into practical solutions that respond to the needs of South Carolina communities. Faculty, students and partners work alongside community organizations, health care providers, government agencies and others to identify priorities, develop and evaluate interventions and apply research findings in real-world settings. This connection between research and practice ensures outreach efforts are evidence-based, tailored to local contexts and positioned for broader implementation across the state.
Pictured left, the map of Building Healthy Communities projects demonstrates the breadth of the initiative’s research, outreach and engagement efforts across South Carolina. These projects actively advance the College's mission to build people and communities and contribute to healthier, more resilient communities statewide.
