Membership in Faculty Senate
Clemson University Faculty Senate is comprised of Senators who are elected by their Colleges to bring their faculty concerns, perspectives, and ideas to the Faculty Senate and broader university leadership. The officers of the Faculty Senate will be the President, the Vice President, who is also the President-Elect, and the Secretary. Their duties are perscribed in the Senate Bylaws.
Senators are responsible for advancing and supporting the mission of the Faculty Constitution, upholding the policies and decisions of the Faculty Senate, and advocating Senate policy positions across all levels of university governance. They serve as key points of communication with their constituents and assist in identifying and recruiting prospective Faculty Senators.
In addition, Senators act as liaisons between the Faculty Senate and the University by attending events relevant to the Senate’s mission. They maintain a strong working knowledge of the Faculty Senate, its programs, and current issues in higher education, both nationally and at Clemson University. Senators serve on other University committees and task forces, representing the Senate and their Colleges in various areas across campus.
Purposes
Established under Article II of the Constitution of the Faculty of Clemson University, the Clemson University Faculty Senate serves as the representative body of the faculty. In partnership with the university administration, the Faculty Senate recommends new policies and policy revisions to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost and advocates for the welfare of the faculty and its members. For more than fifty years, the Faculty Senate has played an active role in strengthening faculty governance and advancing the interests of Clemson University’s academic community.
