Funding and Covered Expenses
How Much Funding Is Available?
Staff may receive up to $5,000 per fiscal year.
Awards may cover all or a portion of the requested amount and will depend on the relevance of the opportunity, demonstrated department or employee professional development need, available program funding, other available funding sources and applicable University and state requirements.
Funding is competitive and is not guaranteed.
What Can Be Funded?
The proposed development opportunity must support the staff member’s current role, trajectory career path at Clemson or an identified University workforce need.
Funding may support approved professional development opportunities such as:
- Professional certificates and preparation programs
- Job-related continuing education
- Specialized training
- Strategic learning programs or cohorts
- Approved courses
- Required books and study materials for certificate or training
- Required learning platforms or software
Departments are responsible for funding mandatory training or credentials required for a staff member’s current position.
Credit bearing tuition should be processed through Clemson’s Employee Tuition Assistance Program.
Certain expenses, including professional license fees, certification examinations and retakes, credential applications and recertification fees are not eligible.
Funding FAQs
-
Is the full $5,000 available for every request?
No. Award amounts will vary based on the request, available funding, demonstrated need, departmental support and applicable University and state requirements.
-
How often can I receive funding?
Staff may receive no more than one award per fiscal year unless an exception is approved for critical institutional needs.
-
Can I use the funds for travel?
Essential travel may be considered when it is directly associated with an approved development opportunity and an equivalent virtual option is unavailable. All travel remains subject to applicable University and state requirements.
-
Does my department have to contribute to the cost?
Departmental cost sharing may be considered but is not required.
-
Does my supervisor’s approval mean my department must provide funding?
No. Supervisor approval demonstrates support for the staff member’s participation. It does not automatically commit the department to providing financial support.
-
What if my department does not have professional development funds available?
Staff members are still encouraged to apply. The program is intended in part to expand access to professional development for staff and units with limited access to other funding.
-
Can the fund be combined with departmental or other funding?
Yes. Central funding may cover all or part of an approved request and departmental or other funding may be used when available.
-
What happens if the cost of my development opportunity exceeds $5,000?
The maximum award from the Staff Professional Development Fund is $5,000 per fiscal year. Any remaining costs would need to be covered by the department, staff member applying or another approved funding source.
-
What if the cost changes after my award is approved?
Awards will be approved for an amount up to the approved funding level. Any costs above that amount are the responsibility of the employee or their unit. Unused funds will remain with the program.
