We're here to help!

The International Employment team is here to support you as you onboard to University employment. All new international hires are required to follow the international employee hiring process. The information provided below connects you to in-person events in August to support you in completing necessary paperwork.

MEET WITH INTERNATIONAL EMPLOYMENT

New employees must meet with the International Employment team prior to beginning work. Appointments are available at the Administrative Services Building (108 Perimeter Road), Riggs Hall (100A) or CU-ICAR, on select days in August.

Appointments must be scheduled in advance* using the online booking tool. When scheduling the appointment, select International Employment and enter the reason for the appointment (new hire, rehire, reverification, etc.) in the Additional Information section. 

After booking an appointment, employees will receive an email confirmation, which contains important information regarding the required documents for the appointment.

  • Examples of Required Documents
    • Unexpired foreign passport
    • Current Form I-94
    • U.S. Social Security card, or SSA receipt letter, indicating the application for an SSA card has been approved
    • Form(s) I-20, if F-1 visa
    • Form(s) DS 2019, if J-1 visa
    • Employment Authorization Card (if F-1 OPT, J-2 visa, L-2 visa, Temporary Protected Status, etc.)
    • Form I-797, with I-94 attached (H1B, TN, O1, etc.)

*Appointments are not required on August 12, when a representative from the Social Security Administration (SSA) will be on campus.

Meet with the Social Security Administration on Campus

A representative from the Social Security Administration (SSA) will be on campus on August 12, to process social security card applications.

Appointments are not required to meet with the SSA, though pre-registration is requested to ensure proper preparation.

Prior to meeting with SSA:

Complete your SEVIS check-in (for student employees only).

Allow 24 hours after receiving your confirmation to complete your Social Security application.

Complete an online Social Security application.

Once complete, the system will prompt you to make an appointment. If you are attending the SSA event on campus, do not make an appointment. Print your confirmation page with the reference number and exit the application.

Complete a physical SS-5 form (PDF).

This completed form must have a wet signature (physical signature with a pen on paper.)

Prepare photocopies of original identification documents.

For F-1 Visa Holders:

  • Current Passport
  • Form I-20
  • Current Form I-94

For J-1 Visa Holders:

  • Current Passport
  • DS-2019
  • Current Form I-94

Bring all required documents, copies and forms to your appointment.

  • Online application confirmation
  • Physical SS-5 form
  • Original, unexpired identifying documents
  • An employment letter, provided by your hiring department and signed by Immigration Services, OR an employment/sponsor offer letter

Quick Tips!

  • Double-check all addresses on the application are correct to ensure your social security card is delivered to the correct address.
  • If you do not have all the necessary documents on August 12, social security card applications will be processed at the SSA office within 1-2 business days.

If you can't meet with SSA on August 12...

Social Security card applications can be processed through the local SSA office. Follow the instructions in Step 2 of the International Employee Hiring Process to complete your application and make an appointment.

Foreign National Information System

New hires receive an email message with directions to access the Foreign National Information System (FNIS) to input required information before work begins. If you experience difficulties with the FNIS system, please contact International Employment. Some information may not be available at the time of completion. Fill out the FNIS documentation as completely as possible, prior to meeting with International Employment.
