Research Interests

Spencer’s work focuses on avian ecology and applied research, with an emphasis on understanding how birds respond to forest disturbance and management. He helps coordinate and support large, collaborative bird monitoring efforts assessing the impacts of Hurricane Helene across National Forests of North Carolina. Spencer works with bird point counts, autonomous recording units (ARUs), mist netting and banding, telemetry, nest searches, and vegetation surveys, and enjoys training and working alongside field crews in remote, mountainous environments. Spencer serves as the master bander for the Hurricane Helene project.
