Profile

Tawanah comes from an extensive career in youth development, storytelling, as well as entrepreneurship. Her professional background includes being a sales manager and corporate trainer before establishing a tutoring and mentorship program in the South Carolina Lowcountry while teaching in hybrid schools. After COVID, she transitioned to work in journalism as the Managing Editor of six titles for a business magazine publisher and the Content Coordinator for Crowfield Living Magazine in Goose Creek, S.C. She found her passion for supporting youth leadership as well as civic and community engagement at Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta, where she served in multiple capacities before becoming the Leadership Development Manager for 6th-12th grade girls. A former 4-H participant and youth Girl Scout, Tawanah understands the value of creating safe, educational 'third spaces' for young people to grow, develop, and have fun.

She studied Journalism and Communications at the University of Central Florida and Northwest Florida State College, eventually earning a Bachelors of Arts in Creative Writing (Fiction) from Southern New Hampshire University. Currently, Tawanah is an M.F.A. candidate at the College of Charleston for Creative Writing (Fiction) with an emphasis in Arts & Cultural Management.

In her first year at Clemson Extension, she founded and directed the inaugural Lowcountry 4-H Convention in Charleston at the Citadel Mall, a seminal community engagement event designed to bring greater awareness and participation to both South Carolina 4-H Youth Development and Clemson Extension programs in the South Carolina Lowcountry.

Tawanah remains excited about igniting sparks and creating spheres of belonging for Dorchester County youth and the volunteers who support them.
