About the Position

Work with high school seniors while conducting your own research

TThe Summer Program for Research Interns (SPRI) is an academic research experience for rising 12th grade students from the Governor’s School of Math and Science. The program is planned and sponsored by the Clemson University Honor’s College with the Clemson University Summer Scholars Program providing summer training, supervision, and guidance. Students will attend the program for 6 weeks throughout June and July where they will reside on campus and conduct research with University faculty members and/or graduate students. The role of the counselor is to lead, mentor, and supervise campers in all areas of summer programming and perform duties that are required by the Summer Scholars Director.

Principal Duties

  • Serve as a positive mentor and guide for students by demonstrating positive and productive behavior, modeling and maintaining clear expectations, and serving as a guide for the Clemson experience while creating and maintaining positive relationships with campers.
  • Maintain and engage in proper supervision of all students by residing in the residence halls and attending to campers overnight and while around campus as needed.
  • Lead campers in scheduled programs and activities when not in lab, including morning and evening room checks, meals in the dining hall, campus tours, team building initiatives, recreational activities, weekly Honor’s College luncheons, and any other programs or events scheduled by the Summer Scholars leadership team.
  • Conduct regular check-in and out procedures with students to and from lab, campus exploration, or weekend leave.
  • Be actively involved in all program activities whether planned and facilitated by counselor staff or leadership team. This includes afternoon and evening scheduled activities and any other impromptu activity times.
  • Directly supervise campers while involved in camp activities to ensure a safe and productive camp environment.
  • Ensure campers are engaging in smart and safe behavior while around campus and downtown Clemson.
  • Assist with routine facility supervision and upkeep.
  • Assist with camp check-in and check-out days.
  • Adhere to all University and Summer Scholars policies including the current COVID-19 policy both on and off campus.
  • Attend required pre-camp training.
  • Any additional responsibilities as assigned by the Leadership Team.

Qualifications and Benefits

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma.
  • Working toward a college degree at Clemson University.
  • Adaptable and a team player
  • Positive Attitude
  • Active listener with strong communication skills
  • Must already have or be willing to obtain CPR/First Aid certification (certification training provided).

Additional Qualifications

  • Residential camp, child-care, or residential assistant experience appreciated.
  • Prior leadership experience on or off campus.
  • Honors College students are a plus.
  • Lifeguard Certification
