Brand Compliance

The College of Science Marketing and Communications Department can help you with your branding or marketing questions.

A Clemson University logo or wordmark is a standardized graphic representation associated with this institution. Because of the value to Clemson University, any logo or wordmark that is intended to represent the University is the property of the University and must fit all University guidelines. Logos and/or wordmarks may not be used for commercial purposes without prior approval of the University’s Trademarks and Licensing Office.

Use of any logo on such “swag” items as T-shirts, pens, stickers and mugs should be approved by the Marketing and Communications Department and must produced by a licensed vendor. The Marketing and Communications Department can assist with this process.

To provide brand recognition and connect University units with the Clemson University brand, print and digital communications for all Clemson University units should reflect consistent graphic identity standards. To maintain brand consistency, a five-level system clarifies current logos and helps bring consistency to any future logos or wordmarks. Any logo variations should be reviewed in advance by by the College of Science Marketing and Communications Department, which will, in turn, seek approval from the University’s Marketing and Communications team, as needed.

Logos should never be modified in any way, other than to resize them as needed.

Branded Assets

The University released new brand guidelines and brand elements in 2020.

Branded assets for the College and departments are available in Canto. In the Canto library, you will find brand resources such as logos, letterhead and presentation templates. A Clemson University login is required to access this library. You may resize assets, but do not otherwise modify them.

Need Something Else?

If you need a logo or asset not in the library, or have any questions about using these assets, please contact Amy Clarke Burns at clarkeb@clemson.edu or Pete Martin at pdmarti@clemson.edu for assistance.

  • Logo File Formats Explained

Three file formats are provided for each logo. Each logo generally is available in a full-color version, as well as versions with some or all objects reversed. Each logo file format is suited for a specific task. Here is a brief description of the five types, and where usage is appropriate.

    CMYK .eps or .pdf

An EPS or PDF logo is for professional print use; it is generally the best logo to use. Note that EPS files will open on a Mac without any special software, but may not open on a PC unless appropriate software has been loaded. However, that does not impact functionality; the logo can be sent to a vendor or graphic artist for use in a design. Generally, a product using an EPS/PDF logo would be designed by the marketing and communications team. This is:

    • A vector logo, meaning it can be resized without any quality loss.
    • A four-color process logo file, ideal for normal commercial printing.
    • Perfect for brochures, banners, signs, booklets and forms.

    RGB .jpg

A JPG logo is for online or internal “office” use. It should never be used for commercially printed jobs. This is:

    • A raster logo, meaning it is basically a photograph.
    • Not ideal for enlargement (or reduction) as quality quickly suffers.
    • Perfect for use on websites, in social media, in email or in Microsoft Office documents.
    • OK for basic documents that will be only printed on a desktop printer.
    • Not transparent.

    RGB .png

A PNG logo is for online or internal “office” use. It should never be used for commercially printed jobs. This is:

    • A raster logo, meaning it is basically a photograph.
    • Not ideal for enlargement (or reduction) as quality quickly suffers.
    • Perfect for use on websites, in social media, in email or in Microsoft Office documents where transparency is required.
    • OK for basic documents that will be only printed on a desktop printer.
    • Transparent.

    Spot-color logos

These are provided as needed to vendors. Spot-color logos are used for some specialized print work or sometimes on swag items. Please contact the Marketing and Communications Department for more information, as logos may need adjustment depending on a given usage scenario to guarantee branding accuracy.
