Profile

Although Fall 2022 will be her first semester as a faculty member, Rachel Sanders grew up on Clemson's campus and, later in life, graduated from the University with a master's degree in teaching. She secured her first position at a public arts magnet school in Anderson. Rachel taught seventh-grade writing there for three years before pursuing a Ph.D. In 2018, she received a doctoral degree in Language and Literacy Education from The University of Georgia after producing a new literacies dissertation. She sought to broaden the scholarly compositions accepted within higher education to advance academic research in the ever-broadening practices of literacy. In 2019, Rachel began her first academic position as an Assistant Professor of Literacy Education at the University of Texas in San Antonio (UTSA), designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution and a Carnegie R1 institution. She is currently a Visiting Lecturer for the Master of Education in Literacy (Online) program in the Department of Education and Human Development here at Clemson University. She has an established research agenda focused on critical and new literacy studies, explicitly concerning writing and adolescent learners.
